Next ‘Resident Evil’ Movie Will Definitely Be the Last (At Least Until the Eventual Reboot)
As Resident Evil: The Final Chapter prepares to begin shooting later this year, we’re left to wonder whether the film’s subtitle is honest. Is this really the last chapter of one of the longest-running horror franchises? According to one of the stars of the film, it most definitely is.
Well, at least until they decide in a few years to reboot it.
Ali Larter, who was recently announced to be returning for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter alongside Milla Jovovich, spoke to IGN about the upcoming installment and, when asked whether this really, truly is the “final chapter” she responded confidently, “I know it is.” But, even though the franchise is coming to an end, weep not for Ali Larter.
How many movies have this kind of fanbase and get to be made six times? I think that's extraordinary. It's a total testament to Milla and [director] Paul [W.S. Anderson]. I'm so grateful to them, that they chose me to be a part of it halfway through, and they've kept me along for the ride.
It does seem remarkable in retrospect that the Resident Evil franchise has continued on as long as it has, but then we do some quick research and discover that the five films have made just short of $1 billion worldwide. That’s an impressive haul considering their budget is a fraction of that number.
And it’s that kind of math that makes us believe that there really is no end to the Resident Evil franchise. We already know that they’re planning to cash in on that zombies-on-TV trend with a Resident Evil TV series, and eventually you have to assume that in a few years time, they’ll reboot the entire thing back to the beginning, cast a new actress and start all over again. Then, in about 20 years from now, someone else will be writing an article about how it really really is the end of the franchise.
The new and “final” Resident Evil movie goes a little something like this:
Project Alice is forced to race against time before the villainous Red Queen attempts to destroy the final remnants of humanity.
Filming on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is expected to begin in September for a 2016 release date.
