USA’s ‘Purge’ TV Series Sets Cast With New Story Details
Two new citizens are officially joining The Purge. Syfy and USA’s TV adaptation of the ultra-violent franchise has found its leads in a War veteran and a Six star, in the process revealing some curious new details of the story.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that War for the Planet of the Apes star Gabriel Chavarria and Six alum Jessica Garza will play the series’ two leads. Chavarria will take the role of Miguel, described as “a U.S. Marine with a hard edge and a noble mission. After receiving a cryptic letter from his little sister, he returns to town on Purge Night — prepared to face the senseless violence in the streets alone in order to protect what he loves most — his family.” Garza, meanwhile, will play a role tied to an apparent cult around The Purge itself. Her character Penelope is said to have “pledged herself to be sacrificed at the behest of their charismatic leader,” though her “faith is tested when she is exposed to the ghastly realities of the Purge.”
Previously, writer-director James DeMonaco suggested that the series would take place on the other 364 days of the year, using a flashback structure to make it “more of a character study.” DeMonaco also previously claimed to be casting a black female lead and a “young Puerto Rican brother and sister,” the former of which may be Chavarria’s character. The series is also said to take place before film character Charlie Roan, but after the New Founding Fathers of America and The Purge itself have been well-established.
DeMonaco will write and executive produce the ten-episode series, with Thomas Kelly is on board as executive producer and showrunner. The drama will air on both USA and Syfy networks, so stay tuned for the latest.
