Throwback Thursday: Slick Rick [VIDEO]
Slick Rick is my favorite lyricist of all time!!! Also known as MC Ricky D, he is often heralded as Hip-Hop's greatest "story-teller", thus making him a legend in the Hip-Hop world. Eminem has stated in the past he patterned his early narrative rap style abilities after Rick.
Slick Rick, who's government name is Richard Walters, is an English born emcee that moved to the states in the late 1970's. Walters rose to prominence after joining Doug E. Fresh's "Get Fresh Crew" and recording the hit songs "The Show" and "La Di Da Di". After the success of those two singles, he signed a record deal with Russell Simmon's Def Jam label and recorded his biggest hit, "Children's Story" which has been sampled by a multitude of artist, the most popular probably being Montel Jordan's: "This Is How We Do It".
Slick Rick has been referenced and/or sampled by a large number of Hip-Hop's heavyweights, even to this day, such as Snoop Lion, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Nas, Macklemore and Lil Wayne to name just a few.
Long live Slick Rick - The Ruler!!!
