The 1987 college football season was the start of the Paul Roach era for the Wyoming Cowboys, and it was one to remember.

After a 1-2 start, the Pokes rattled off nine straight wins on their way to a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship. The streak included a two-point victory in Provo over BYU and a two-point win over Houston at War Memorial Stadium.

The season culminated with Wyoming’s first appearance in the Holiday Bowl. It had been 11 years since the Cowboys last appeared in a bowl game. UW took on legendary coach Hayden Fry and Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Pokes were led by Gerald Abraham, Craig Burnett, Anthony Sargent and James Loving on offense. The likes of Galand Thaxton, Jeff Knapton and Mike Schenbeck anchored the defense.

The game went down to the wire, but the Pokes lost by one. Still a heck of a game to look back on. Wyoming finished the season with a 10-3 record.
