WATCH: Teton Pass Backcountry Skier Barely Escapes Avalanche

I have come across a video that is a good reminder of what can happen when you're skiing the backcountry of the Wyoming mountains.

This is not a new video. As a matter of fact, this happened near Teton Pass nearly 10 years ago. Jamie Storrs shared this video on YouTube way back in the spring of 2010. A skier was casually gliding across a path when he noticed that the snow below him was moving.

Fortunately for him, he realized that he was skiing across a huge avalanche that easily could have carried him down the mountain with it. As the camera pans back, you begin to understand this was no small snow slide, but a full-on avalanche.

I share this flashback now as a reminder of taking extra caution when you're leisurely enjoying the snow joy that Wyoming offers. If you road trip to the Big Horns or the Tetons, the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center is a great resource to make sure you're aware of the current danger areas. They have a very up-to-date map of recent avalanche events so you can see where snow trouble has happened.

We are fortunate to not have many avalanche fatalities in Wyoming, but Jamie's video is a reminder that it can happen when you least expect it.
