A man accused of assaulting and choking his wife at their home in June admitted to two felony charges brought against him at his arraignment Tuesday morning in Natrona County District Court.

Daniel William Chartier, 28, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of strangulation of a household member and one misdemeanor count of domestic battery.

In exchange for the guilty pleas, the state agreed to dismiss three other counts initially filed against Chartier. But each guilty plea is what's known as a "cold plea," meaning the state has made no agreement as to sentencing, except that the penalty for the domestic battery charge will run concurrently with any sentence on the strangulation charge.

As such, Chartier could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Charging papers say Casper police officers responded to a home on Indian Paintbrush for a report of a family fight at about 5 a.m. on June 22.

Officers arrived and found the victim with dried blood on, inside and around her nose. Officers recorded their conversation with the victim, who said she and Chartier had been arguing and fighting since about 10 p.m. They had each consumed about a fifth of alcohol.

At about 10 p.m., the victim said, she was walking upstairs from the basement when Chartier grabbed her head and slammed her face into the handrail, chipping one of her front teeth. She passed out, and did not remember what time she regained consciousness.

When she came to, the victim said the fighting resumed. On two occasions, she told police, Chartier put both his hands around her throat and choked her for about 40 seconds each time. Chartier allegedly said, "Stop talking b----, I thought I told you to stop talking."

"I thought I was going to die when Daniel was choking me," the victim told police, according to court documents.

She later tried to leave the home when Chartier was sleeping, only to be assaulted again. Chartier allegedly slapped and punched her on both sides of her head and face.

Police noted dried blood on the victim's right hand, which she said was from her nose. She showed officers her chipped tooth, and officers saw dried blood on her lips.

Officers then spoke with Daniel Chartier, who was reportedly "very uncooperative and combative." He allegedly told them, "I don't know anything about a chipped tooth or a f------ bloody nose."

Chartier was arrested, though he reportedly swore at the victim as he was being walked to the patrol car. He allegedly refused to get into the back seat, so officers had to force him inside.

The victim was taken to Wyoming Medical Center. Police photographed her injuries as evidence, and one officer saw hand marks on the victim's neck.

Chartier was also taken to Wyoming Medical Center to be cleared before being booked into jail. He allegedly told police, "I don't know how her tooth got chipped or how she got hurt." He was then taken to the Natrona County Detention Center.

In court Tuesday, Chartier told Natrona County District Court Judge Thomas Sullins, "I don't remember what happened that night."

Public defender Curtis Cheney asked Sullins to release Chartier on a personal recognizance bond pending sentencing, saying the victim now lives in another state and has filed for divorce.

Assistant District Attorney Brett Johnson asked Sullins to leave the bond amount unchanged at $25,000 cash or surety, adding that Chartier has a criminal history including false imprisonment and domestic battery charges.

Johnson said Chartier has repeatedly assaulted his wife, and in this case, "He's slamming her head into the handrail, knocking her unconscious."

Sullins declined to modify Chartier's bond. A sentencing hearing will be set at a later date.
