Firefighters contending with red flag conditions made progress on a wildfire in Sublette County on Sunday, preventing new growth and knocking down flare-ups.

The Tannerite Fire began Saturday afternoon and has burned 1,340 acres. It remained 20 percent contained as of Monday morning and is located between Burnt and Boulder Lakes south of Pinedale.

Over one hundred people are working to fight the fire, with safety and property protection the chief objectives. While homes and other buildings are threatened, no primary residences had burned as of Monday morning.

Evacuations that were put in place Saturday have been lifted, though the Burnt Lake Road above the Boulder Lake Dam will remain closed.

The fire was started by one or more people, officials say, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The Sublette County Sheriff's Office on Saturday said the fire was the result of someone shooting at exploding targets.

The Western Wyoming Type 3 Incident Mangement Team, led by Incident Commander Jon Ziegler, assumed command of the fire response at 7 a.m. Monday. An incident command post has been established at the Burnt Lake Elk Feedgrounds, according to fire managers.

Single-engine and large aircraft have been dropping retardant on the fire as ground crews focus on securing the fire perimeter.

Monday marks the third day firefighters have been battling the blaze. A red flag warning remains in place, meaning low humidities, high temperatures and strong winds are creating ideal conditions for wildfire growth.
