A family was displaced and no injuries occurred, but a dog perished in a fire that damaged a house in Evansville on Sunday morning.

The blaze sent a cloud of black smoke that trailed northeast of Evansville.

Corey Ramsey, spokesman for the Evansville Fire Department, said the call arrived at 7:41 a.m. about a structure fire in the 300 block of South Big Horn.

First arriving units found a single-family home with heavy smoke showing from the front of house, and heavy fire showing from back, Ramsey said.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the house's exterior, and were able to quickly extinguish it, Ramsey said. Steam still was rising from the water put on the fire.

Crews also set up fans to ventilate the house, which suffered significant smoke damage, Ramsey said.

Chuck Burrous said he is the father of the woman who lives there. Three other members of the family had gone to the lake earlier, he said.

The woman was sleeping in the lower floor of the house, when she awoke and had difficulty breathing, Burrous said.

A neighbor saw the blaze and called 911, he said.

She was able to get out of the house, but one of family's dogs died in the fire, Burrous said.

Ramsey said another pet was able to escape with the owner.

Emergency responders included the Evansville and Casper fire departments, the Natrona County Fire Protection District, the Evansville Police Department, an ambulance from the Wyoming Medical Center, and crews from Rocky Mountain Power and Black Hills Energy.

Casper Fire-EMS investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, Ramsey said.
