Living in Wyoming we have to deal with arctic temperatures and snowstorms. It is a part of life. We add another layer or crank up the heat, but what about our four-legged friends? When is it too cold for dogs? Canines like humans are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

The first thing to consider is if they are an indoor or outdoor pet. Dogs will grow a thick winter coat if they are used to colder regions. That little pomeranian who spends most of its life in a purse probably isn't going to fare well in a Wyoming snowstorm. The husky who spends most of its life outdoors is going to handle the cold much better. You have to know your animals. A rule of thumb is if it is cold to you, it is cold for your pet.

At Petplan, they put together a chart with some handy guidelines to temperatures when it comes to the welfare of your pups. Using their chart (and assuming your dog is used to Wyoming weather,) dogs are at serious risk once you get below zero degrees. Temperatures below -12 are life-threatening to most dogs.
