Selena Gomez paid an emotional tribute to Christina Grimmie — who was killed while doing a post-show meet-and-greet in Orlando on June 10 — during her June 11 Revival Tour stop in Miami.

Before singing the Christian pop song "Transfiguration," as well as her own Revival tune "Nobody," the pop star paused her show to honor her late friend.

"When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her," Selena told the crowd, her voice breaking as she fought back tears. "One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it's not about a religion and it's not about anything or good deeds. It's just that she had faith, and I don't really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her."

Selena also reportedly canceled her own meet-and-greet event that night over safety concerns.

The two singers had a long and precious friendship. In 2011, Christina told Seventeen that she was discovered on YouTube by Selena's stepfather, Brian Teefey, who then became her manager. Through him she met Selena, and the two quickly became good friends, with Christina opening for the pop star twice — both on her 2011 We Own the Night Tour and 2013 Stars Dance Tour.

Christina and Selena, as well as her former band, The Scene, also starred together in an XBOX commercial.

"Words cannot begin to describe the pain I am feeling," Teefey, who set up a GoFundMe campaign in support of the Grimmie family, told PEOPLE in a statement. "I learned this business through the eyes of a father and Christina was like a second daughter to me."

Hours before her performance in Miami, Selena shared a photo of herself and Grimmie, writing, "My heart is absolutely broken. I miss you Christina."
