USA To Catch Up With Wyoming [VIDEO]

For the past 234 years the bald eagle has been the animal symbol of The United States, but that’s about over. The House Of Representatives passed a bipartisan National Bison Legacy Act this week and Fox says “The Senate gave final approval to the bill Thursday, two days after the House approved it. It now goes to the president's desk.” It’s your move Obama.

It wasn’t that long ago that millions of bison roamed the vast rolling plains of the U.S. until America’s westward expansion brought the animals mass slaughter and near extinction reducing their numbers to just over a thousand. President Theodore Roosevelt and the Wildlife Conservation Society helped to reintroduce the bison into the wild and today there are an estimated 500,000 of them.

Wyoming designated the American bison as the official state mammal back in 1985. The bison is also the state symbol of Kansas and Oklahoma. Wyoming has the bison on our state flag. As StateSymbolsUSA.Org states:

“The buffalo (Bison bison) is an inseparable part of American history; no other wild animal has played such a significant role in human affairs. The tribes of the American plains relied on bison for food, shelter, clothing, and as a powerful spiritual symbol.“
