The National Weather Service is warning of the possibility of heavy snowfall across northern Wyoming on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to a winter storm watch, which is set to be in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon, the NWS advises residents to plan on difficult travel conditions as a result of the storm, with up to 19 inches of snow accumulation possible in the Bighorn Mountains.

The winter storm watch includes the Absaroka Mountains, western and southeastern Bighorn Mountains, Cody, Meeteetse and northeast Johnson County, including Buffalo.

In the Bighorns, four to seven inches of snow is possible, with localized amounts up to 19 inches.

The Absarokas could see six to nine inches of snow, with localized amounts up to 18 inches. The NWS warns of blowing and drifting snow in the area, with the possibility of damage to trees and power lines.

The Cody Foothills, including Cody and Meeteetse, could get four to six inches of snow, with localized amounts up to nine inches.

Northeastern Johnson County, including Buffalo, could see three to five inches of snow accumulation, with localized amounts up to seven inches.

Significant reductions in visibility are possible in the aforementioned areas, according to the NWS. In the Absarokas, visibility could be reduced as a result of heavy snowfall and blowing snow.

The National Weather Service says a cold front will sag south across northern Wyoming on Wednesday, stalling before it begins to slowly move north on Thursday.

A prolonged period of snow, with heavy snowfall at times, is likely in the vicinity of the front, and could bring significant snow accumulation across northern Wyoming through Thursday.

On Wednesday, high winds are possible across the state. K2 Radio Meteorologist Don Day of DayWeather says the wind will pose a high blowover risk on I-80 and I-25.
