Is it Illegal to Warm Up Your Vehicle in Wyoming?
With the brutally cold winters in Wyoming many residents (including yours truly) let their cars warm up a bit while waiting indoors. But did you know that you could get a ticket for doing just that?
A man in Michigan was fined recently for allowing his vehicle to idle in his own driveway and the story made national headlines. But it turns out that this could happen in Wyoming, too!
The Wyoming legislature enacted a statute in back 2014 to try and help reduce vehicle emissions in the cowboy state. And according to Wyoming Statute 31-5-509: Requirements before leaving motor vehicle unattended.
No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.
Note that this infraction is enforceable on any vehicle parked on any public street or roadway, but it DOES NOT include vehicles parked on private property or in a residential driveway on private property.
Basically, if you park your vehicle on a public street you could be ticketed for letting your car idle while unattended. The fine for such a violation according to state statute can be up to $750, per incident.
