With the temperatures dropping and the snowfall accumulating, many people utilize automatic start. Every year running vehicles are stolen while they are unattended. In addition to theft, a really good reason not to leave your vehicle running unattended is because it is illegal in the Cowboy State.

Wyoming Statute 31-5-509 states that:

No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.

It is worth noting that the infraction is enforceable on any vehicle parked on any public street or roadway, but it does NOT include vehicles parked on private property or in a residential driveway on private property.
