Falling rock and mud have forced the closure of the highway through the Wind River Canyon, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation's website.

Motorists need to find alternate routes to travel from the Boysen Dam area to Thermopolis after heavy rains caused the rock and mudslides that blocked U.S. Highway 20/Wyoming Highway 789, according to WYDOT spokesman Cody Beers.

Crews are on the scene moving the debris.

WYDOT also has closed U.S. 212 between the Montana state line and mile marker 4.5 at the westbound closure gate because of winter conditions.

Likewise, U.S. 212 between Wyoming 296 and Beartooth Pass is closed because of winter conditions.

WYDOT also cautions motorists about falling rock hazards several roads throughout the state:

  • U.S. 26-89 between Alpine and Hoback Junction, and on U.S. 189-191 between Hoback Junction and Bondurant.
  • U.S. 89 between the Idaho state line and Afton.
  • Wyoming 22 between the Idaho state line and Wilson.
  • U.S. 14-16-20 between the Shoshone National Forest boundary and Cody.
  • U.S. 14 between Elk View and Dayton School.

Check with WYDOT's website for updates.
